FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions about the Harp
Pedal Harp
What is a Pedal Harp?
A Pedal Harp is a larger and heavier instrument. They are used by professional harpists as they provide a wider range of notes both at the bottom and the top of the instrument. This harp has pedals rather than levers as the name suggests. It is recommended that students switch to Pedal Harp around Grade 4/5 AMEB latest to continue their studies.
Harp at Home
Do I need to have a harp at home?
In short, the answer is yes. Like most other instruments, it is necessary to have a harp at home if you want to see progress each week. Practising is the key to steady development on this and any instrument. If you aren't wanting to invest in purchasing as instrument, there are rental options. Gemma can also recommend several places in Melbourne that provide Harp Rentals if she does not have a current rental harp availability.
What to Bring
What should I bring to a lesson?
It is recommended that students bring something to write notes in each week to keep track of lesson content. It is not necessary to bring in a harp for each lesson unless desired so. Gemma will provide her pedal harp for lessons. You are able to learn on a pedal harp and practise on a lever harp as the majority of the technique is transferrable!
Lever Harp
What is a Lever Harp?
A Lever Harp, also known as a Celtic or Folk Harp is much smaller in size, making it easily transportable. The Lever Harp is recommended for beginner students and young students as it is more accessible to find and suitable to play. The Lever harp uses levers above the strings at the top of the harp to change each strings' pitches.
Moving Harps
How do I move a Harp?
This depends on what type of harp you have - Pedal or Lever. Either way, both harps should be transported in a vehicle as opposed to PTV due to the fragility of the instrument. The Harp should be laid down flat on its side. The side touching the vehicle should be the non-lever or tuning pin side to avoid damage to the strings in transit. The Pedal Harp will need a trolley to move around whereas the Lever Harp can be lifted and carried by hand.
Exams
Can I sit Exams?
Yes. Gemma is able to guide you through the process of sitting AMEB harp and music theory exams. She also has experience supporting students through the VCE exams. Sitting exams is however not mandatory and is the student's decision to pursue examinations. There is no pressure to sit exams, playing harp for fun is great too!
